On Bishop Robert Barron’s YouTube Channel Word On Fire’, Hollywood star Shia LeBeouf announced to the world he has converted to Catholicism after training with Franciscan friars to play the Catholic Saint Padre Pio.
Shia LeBeouf recounted that prior to his conversion, he was at the lowest point in his life.
” I had a gun on the table. I was outta here. I didn’t want to be alive anymore, when all this happened. Shame like I had never experienced before — the kind of shame where you forget how to breathe. You don’t know where to go. You can’t go outside and get like, a taco…. But I am also in this deep desire to hold on,”
This deep sense of guilt has qualified many a sinner. The Philippian Jailer was on the verge of suicide until Saint Paul explained to him the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ — “believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you shall be saved,” (Acts 16:31). A broken and contrite heart, the Lord will not despise, after all. Godly contrition leads to repentance unto salvation.
LeBeouf also said he felt compelled to pursue holiness once he saw sin was a fundamental feature of human existence — something all saints struggled with. More importantly, it was seeing the power of forgiveness — Christ forgives the chief of all sinners.
“It was seeing other people who have sinned beyond anything I could ever conceptualize also being found in Christ that made me feel like, ‘Ok well, that gives me hope.’
…Hope is — hearing other peoples experiences. I started hearing experiences of other depraved people who had found their way in this, and it made me feel like I had permission.”
We pray that Shia LeBeouf’s journey into the Christian faith continues. Christ intercedes for all mankind — especially those who believe.
We pray that He rests securely in the love of His Savior. God is always working to bring His sheep into the fold. His love will never depart from those who trust in Him and His grace.
