'The Socialist Wing' Is In Control: McCarthy Slams Biden For Stonewalling On Debt Negotiations, Says He'd Rather Default Then Cut Radical Left Proposals

Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) opined that President Joe Biden would rather risk defaulting rather than actually helping resolve the major debt crisis that the country is experiencing.

The Californian lawmaker tweeted, "President Biden doesn’t think there is a single dollar of savings to be found in the federal government’s budget...He’d rather be the first president in history to default on the debt than to risk upsetting the radical socialists who are calling the shots for Democrats right now," according to Breitbart News

The Speaker also tweeted over the weekend that in his opinion, "The White House is moving backward in negotiations. Unfortunately, the socialist wing of the Democrat Party appears to be in control—especially with President Biden out of the country."

The president, after previously refusing to sit down with McCarthy to talk about the debt crisis, elected to take a foreign trip in the middle of talks. Speaker McCarthy wrote that he "[j]ust got off the phone with the president while he’s out of the country. My position has not changed. Washington cannot continue to spend money we do not have at the expense of children and grandchildren. Tomorrow, he and I will meet in person to continue negotiations."

Given how Mr. McCarthy emphasized that "for more than 100 days, the President and Democrats refused to negotiate a responsible debt limit increase. They treated this crisis the same as the border: Ignore it until it's a full-blown emergency. Now, with just 10 days left, Biden risks bumbling into a default", one may infer that the current round of talks have not so far produced an acceptable outcome.

President Biden has threatened to invoke the 14th Amendment of the Constitution which he claims gives him the unilateral power to resolve the debt issue without the need for congressional consent. Here he cites section 5 of the Amendment which in part states that "[t]he validity of the public debt of the United States, authorized by law, including debts incurred for payment of pensions and bounties for services in suppressing insurrection or rebellion, shall not be questioned." The problem with invoking that amendment for Biden is that he is ignoring the following section of the 14th Amendment which clearly states that "The Congress shall have the power to enforce, by appropriate legislation, the provisions of this article." In effect, it is Congress, to which the Constitution assigned the power of the purse, that holds the power over debt.

Even if Biden did hold this power, there is a further problem with his argument. McCarthy is not as, Biden seems to be alleging, questioning the current debt of the United States but challenging the need to accumulate further debt through more excessive spending.

According to a poll noted by Breitbart News, Americans by plurality blame Biden over the House GOP for the current debt debacle.
