Washington D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser called on the federal government to deploy the national guard on Thursday after an influx of illegal immigrants — who were bused up from the Southern Border near Texas — hit the capital streets and began overloading the city’s system.
Bowser was asked for an update on the migrant buses coming from Texas during a press conference — specifically those “that we see… on an increasing basis down near Union Station,” one reporter pushed.
“We are focused, and we continue to be very focused on having the federal government do its part and take the lead in what we see as a growing humanitarian crisis with people who are seeking asylum coming across the country to get to their final destinations,” the liberal mayor replied, adding that, “We are going to continue to pursue federal involvement.”
When asked what increasing federal involvement would look like for D.C., the mayor said she is working with FEMA to secure funding for financial aid.
“We’ve had a number of discussions. We’ve facilitated FEMA’s involvement with a million-dollar grant to now be increased to work with our elite non-profit agency,” she added. “We’ve facilitated using those grant funds to set up a respite center in a neighboring jurisdiction and I’ve also asked the Secretary of the Army to deploy the DC national guard to help lead that effort.”
When pressed for more details on the deployment the mayor explained, “We need space and we need the federal government to be involved. So I’ve asked for the deployment of the guard as long as we need the guard to deal with the humanitarian crisis that we expect to escalate.”
“The number of people crossing the border seeking asylum we expect to only go up,” she concluded. “And we need to make sure that there is a national response, not an ad hoc city by city, state by state response.”
In response to Bowser’s comments, GOP Gov. Greg Abbott (R-TX) released a statement saying politicians in Washington now understand the struggle felt by Texans — and other border-state residents — on a daily basis.
“Washington, D.C. finally understands what Texans have been dealing with every single day,” the statement read. “As our communities are overrun and overwhelmed by thousands of illegal immigrants thanks to President Biden’s open border policies.”
“If the mayor wants a solution to this crisis, she should call on President Biden to take immediate action to secure the border-something he has failed to do,” the statement continued. “The true ongoing humanitarian crisis is along our southern border. The Biden Administration is allowing historic levels of illegal immigrants, weapons, and deadly drugs like fentanyl to surge into our state.”
Now that a Democratic mayor has begun experiencing the hardships of an increased influx of migrants into her city, she seems to understand the struggles Texans have suffered through — each and every day, along the treacherous terrain of America’s Southern Border.
It was only after Abbott began busing migrants to the Democrats’ backyard, that they understood the magnitude of the problem and are now potentially willing to show more interest in solving this issue, rather than sweeping it under the rug.
