In Secret Letter Trudeau Told NATO— Canada Will NEVER Give Mandatory Funding

This week, leaked documents confirmed that Canada’s radical leftist Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told NATO officials in secret that his country would never reach the treaty organization’s mandatory minimum defense spending commitment.

The Washington Post reported Wednesday that the authors of the classified document said that the allied nation’s “widespread” military deficiencies are damaging the diplomatic connections between NATO security partners and allies.

The damning documentation revealed by The Post stated that the “enduring” shortfalls in defense spending under the far-left governments in Ottawa led the armed forces of Canada to assess as of February that it “could not conduct a major operation while simultaneously maintaining its NATO battle group leadership [in Latvia] and aid to Ukraine.” A situation deemed unlikely to change without a major shift in Canadian public opinion.

“Widespread defense shortfalls hinder Canadian capabilities,” the document states, “while straining partner relationships and alliance contributions.”

Defence Minister Anita Anand rejected any suggestion that allies are expressing concerns about Canada’s contributions in a CNN interview Wednesday according to CTV News.

“We spoke about our defence spending, generally speaking, and we discussed the upward trajectory of our defence spending and in fact how Canada continues to make foundational investments for the Canadian Armed Forces,” she said regarding a conversation with David Cohen, the U.S. ambassador to Canada.

Conservative Member of Parliament and Anand’s counterpart (known as a ‘shadow minister’) James Bezan told the Canadian outlet, “Canada has always been one that has depended too heavily upon other nations to provide that collective security. And we definitely have benefited from it.”

He added,

“It’s time for us to step up and make sure that we pull our weight, especially in these dangerous times that we find ourselves in.”

A spokesman for Anand, Daniel Minden claimed in a statement to The Washington Post, that Canada’s “commitment to Euro-Atlantic and global security is ironclad — and we continue to make landmark investments to equip our Armed Forces.”

Trudeau, responding to The Post story, told reporters, “I continue to say, and will always say, that Canada is a reliable partner to NATO, a reliable partner around the world.” without detailing his conversations with NATO leaders or addressing the story directly.
