On Wednesday, Judge Arthur Engoron not only denied the delay request of leading 2024 presidential candidate and 45th President Donald Trump over his late mother-in-law, but he also rescinded his offer to allow Trump to deliver closing arguments in far-left New York Attorney General Letitia James' civil trial.
Engoron initially approved Trump's request to make his closing statement on Thursday as long as he agreed only to make remarks that are "relevant, material facts that are in evidence, and application of the relevant law to those facts."
Trump's lawyer, Chris Kise, wrote in an email to Engoron that limiting Trump's speech shows that Trump "has been wrongfully demeaned and belittled by an out of control, politically motivated Attorney General." Kise then requested the postponement of the closing arguments due to the death of a woman Trump "was very close to," former First Lady Melania Trump's mother, Amajija Knavs.
Judge Engoron ended the conversation by declaring in all caps, "I WILL NOT GRANT ANY FURTHER EXTENSIONS." The trial is a result of James' lawsuit against Trump, his family, and his businesses.
This comes after Engoron ruled in September that Trump's stunning beachfront Palm Beach, Florida Mar-a-Lago estate, the Crown Jewel of Palm Beach, is only worth $18 million, a claim real estate insiders have called "utterly delusional." Engoron sided with Letitia James and found Trump, his family, and his business empire, the Trump Organization, liable for fraud. The judge cited a Palm Beach County assessor who appraised Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate from $18 million to $27.6 million.
In reality, Mar-a-Lago is easily worth well over $1 billion dollars. In 2022, during Trump's April testimony, Trump revealed to prosecutors that Mar-a-Lago is worth $1.5 billion due to a "broker talk" he had. President Trump reacted to the ruling in a post on his top-rated social media platform, Truth Social, writing, "WE NEED JUSTICE IN OUR COUNTRY!" "This political hack judge, who values, Mar-a-Lago, the most spectacular parcel of real estate in Palm Beach, and perhaps all of Florida, at $18 million in order to reduce valuations on my financial statements, which are, in fact, lower than my actual net worth, must be stopped," Trump added.
Trump's Mar-a-Lago sits on 20 acres and has 128 rooms. Trump's club operates as a private club with around reportedly 500 members. For comparison, a 2-acre wooded lot on 1980 S. Ocean Blvd., only 5 minutes away from Mar-A-Lago is listed for $150 million. In a 2022 report, Forbes described Trump's purchase of Mar-a-Lago as one of his best investments, writing, "Trump paid an estimated $10 million for it in 1985 and turned it into a moneymaking club before a rising real estate market made it one of the most valuable homes in the world."
