A new report published by Fox News Digital's investigative team finds Target donated money to an organization that wants to shut down Mount Rushmore.
As Fox News reported on Monday, "Target, via its nonprofit foundation, which has been directed by the retail giant's senior corporate treasurers, funded a grantee pushing to shut down and give away U.S. sovereign land such as Mount Rushmore – believing it to be an 'international symbol of White supremacy.'"
The group in question -- the NDN Collective -- argues the location of Mount Rushmore in the Black Hills of South Dakota is problematic and evidences the continued adverse impact of colonization.
Writing in 2020, NDN Collective CEO and President Nick Tilsen offered his take on the matter, saying in a statement, "Mount Rushmore is an international symbol of white supremacy, and as people across America rightfully pull down statues of white supremacy, we have to look long and hard at how this national monument in the Black Hills upholds and maintains white supremacy on Indigenous lands.”
Referencing the LANDBACK initiatives goal to give the land back to Native Americans, Tilsen continued, writing, “Our LANDBACK efforts started at Mount Rushmore as we not only took a stand against white supremacy and Trump’s racist rhetoric that day, but also in demanding that Mount Rushmore be shut down as a national monument and that all public lands in the Black Hills be returned to Indigenous people.”
The group also has a negative perspective on the military. Fox News Digital reported that the NDN Collective believes the U.S. military is an inherently oppressive force.
"[T]he U.S. military is in the explicit business of taking land away from communities all around the world and using their presence on their land to carry out their own agenda for the inhabitants of that area," Tilsen argued. "Violence is fundamental for the U.S. to maintain its presence, and the military is how they establish dominance domestically and internationally, wherever they may be."
Fox News also notes the group claims the military is rooted in racism: "The origin of the U.S. military and police is rooted in the establishment of informal militias composed of newly arrived settlers looking to make money and own land. The purpose of these informal militias however was not to keep the police or protect citizens, but to clear the land of as many Natives as possible by killing indiscriminately, and catching runaway enslaved Africans."
Target continues to promote the furtherance of a corrosive woke ideology, one unfortunately quite pervasive. Mount Rushmore is a symbol of liberty, not oppression and it depicts the greatness of our nation. As such, the American people demand better.
