New York City Housing Migrants In School Gyms, Worrying Residents About Their Children's Safety And Education

New York City has begun storing the illegal immigrants that have been bussed into the city inside high school gyms as other locations continue to overflow in the city. The housing plan that allows them in the gyms also provides migrants with free pizzas and sandwiches, courtesy of taxpayer dollars.

Parents in the community have come out in droves against the new plan, expressing concerns over housing the migrants right next to school children, per Daily News. The gymnasiums that are housing the illegals are all within Brooklyn and disconnected from the main school buildings, but are nonetheless nearby.

The Adams administration is also using high schools that were closed down, such as the Richard H. Hungerford School located on Staten Island, according to State Assemblyman Sam Pirozzolo on Twitter.

Residents are voicing their concerns about safety as well as the effects the plan will have on the New York City education system. “How would you feel if you were living here and you got these random people moving into a school that’s active that your grandkids go to?” said Danielle Rogers, a citizen who has lived across the street from one of the gymnasiums housing the migrants for seven years.

“I’ve not spoken to a single parent that felt like these people were undeserving of some sort of space or shelter,” said Erika Kendall, president of the Community Education Council for District 17. “But what people are concerned about is the disruption to their children’s education, that their children cannot move freely in their own school, and what this means to have people sleeping overnight in school buildings.”

The plan to use the gyms as migrant housing facilities comes after Camille Varlack, the chief of staff for the Adams administration, issued a memo on May 7th directing all city agencies to locate and identify potential buildings that could be repurposed to house the illegal migrants.

New York City has been completely overwhelmed since the expiration of Title 42, with both the city and the state having to declare a state of emergency to quell the influx of illegals, as previously reported by the DC Enquirer. Other plans besides using the gyms have been put forth, such as repurposing an abandoned prison and shutting down streets to establish tents for the migrants.

Adams has not made a public appearance on Monday or Tuesday, with his office stating, “We will continue to communicate with local elected officials as we open more emergency sites.”

As migrants overwhelm the Big Apple, residents will continue to suffer until the US-Mexico border becomes secure.
