Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY), the firebrand Republican congresswoman from upstate New York, is reportedly being considered to be 45th President Donald Trump's running mate in 2024 as the presidential primary moves to its next stage in New Hampshire, where the 39-year-old lawmaker is campaigning for Trump's return to the White House.
Stefanik reportedly became top of mind for Trump after guests mentioned the lawmaker at a Mar-a-Lago dinner table following her sudden launch into the public spotlight after confronting three university presidents on anti-Semitism on college campuses late last year. When asked about his thoughts on his fellow New Yorker by the Mar-a-Lago guests, Trump told them that she "was a killer." Following that conversation, Stefanik has been on the list of names being considered for the vice presidency, with other potential candidates being Ben Carson, Tucker Carlson, Kristi Noem, Byron Donalds, Kari Lake, and many others.
Stefanik told NBC News that she was "very excited" about Trump's historic Iowa victory but refused to go into detail about her personal conversations with the former president with the outlet. "I'm not going to get into any of my conversations with President Trump. I'm honored to call him a friend. I'm proud to be the first member of Congress to have endorsed his re-election, and he had a huge win in Iowa. So we're very excited about that," she said.
The upstate New York representative has made a name for herself in recent years by being actively pro-Trump throughout her congressional career, which began in 2014. She has become even closer with the America First movement in recent years, with the congresswoman urging the other Republican presidential candidates to drop out of the race and endorse Trump in June 2023, as previously reported by the DC Enquirer.
"Now is the time for Republican voters to unite behind his campaign and focus on winning back the White House," she said at the time, only a few months into the primary campaign season. "Over the past few months, it became clear that President Trump ran away with the Republican nomination and is the best candidate to defeat Joe Biden in 2024. President Trump continues to dominate the Republican primary polls nationally, and the same is true right here in New York State, according to the latest Siena Poll, showing Trump winning by over 50 percent. I hear from voters across the state that we need President Trump back in the White House to save America from the disastrous policies of Joe Biden."
As the presidential primary comes to a close, the question of who should be Trump's vice president will be at the top of conservatives' minds across the country. You can read NBC's full report here.
