Representative Matt Gaetz (R-FL) called for the impeachment of Alejandro Mayorkas, Biden's Secretary of Homeland Security, for dereliction of duty on the border on both social media and during a discussion panel on Newsmax.
On Tuesday, Representative Gaetz wrote, "[i]f Republicans are serious about the border, we should impeach Secretary Mayorkas immediately. But I am ashamed to report that I do not think we have the votes right now to move that impeachment out of the House Judiciary Committee. That is WEAKNESS on the part of Republicans."

Attached to this tweet was a video of Mr. Gaetz on a discussion panel on Newsmax using parallel language that called for the imminent impeachment of Secretary Mayorkas and the derision that the lack of votes to do so by Republicans signaled weakness.
This is not the first time that the Florida Republican has lamented the lack of willpower by his party members to impeach the Secretary of Homeland Security. He pointed to such a lack of will back in February of this year when he declared to the press that "We don’t have the votes...I don’t think we’re close to having the votes."
The embattled secretary has already survived several attempts by some Republican lawmakers to impeach him by introducing such motions on the House floor.
Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) offered this to say when asked whether the House should move to impeach Mayorkas, "Yes. Absolutely yes. It is something that I have called for loudly...the reason it is worth it [an impeachment trial even if conviction in the Senate will not follow] is to put these facts [an open border and a derelict adminstration] before the American people."

NYC MAYOR ERIC ADAMS CALLS FOR 'CITIES, VILLAGES, TOWNS' ACROSS AMERICA TO TAKE IN ILLEGAL MIGRANTS AS HIS SANCTUARY CITY IS OVERWHELMED
Mayorkas has been in denial about the sheer scale of failure of his administration to secure the border. Mayorkas has repeatedly denied, despite historically high illegal immigration rates, that the borders were or are open. He also curiously blamed Congress for the difficulties faced on the (apparently not) open border despite evidence that speaks to his administration's failure to uphold current laws or use current laws in this context.
Mr. Mayorkas has also come under attack from previous officials who dealt with the border for being "the most dangerous man in the Biden administration; a known liar; and chief architect of Biden’s open border policies — killing Americans and migrants every day and jeopardizing our nation’s safety and national security." Mayorkas has also been accused of manipulating statistics with respect to border enforcement and ignoring sound advice.
Local agents on the border have described the disparity between Mayorkas's statements about the border versus what is actually occurring on the border. One border patrol chief admitted that they had lost operational control of the southern border and how the policies of the administration have decreased the effectiveness of the border patrol force.
