Representative Jason Smith (R-MI), chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, demands that the IRS provide answers about allegations of retaliation taken against a whistleblower by the removal of the whistleblower and his team from the Hunter Biden tax probe.
According to Just the News, the IRS whistleblower previously, through his attorney, told Congress that there was clear political interference by the leadership with his tax probe into the president's son. The House Ways and Means Committee is the oldest committee in congressional history and is tasked with crafting tax law.
Chairman Smith wrote a letter to Biden's head of the IRS, Commissioner David Werfel, demanding that Congress receive "an urgent briefing and explanation from your office regarding extremely troubling allegations." These allegations concern retaliation against the whistleblower. Representative Smith observed that such allegations ran "directly counter" to Commissioner Werfel's "sworn testimony in front of the Committee on Ways and Means. Smith emphasized that "[t]hese allegations are extremely serious. Such retaliation not only discourages whistleblowers from coming forward to Congress but can also constitute an illegal violation of statutory protections for whistleblowers."

The chairman's letter also noted that this alleged act of retaliation came "less than three weeks" after Werfel's vow to protect any whistleblower from retaliation. Mr. Smith demanded that a briefing by the IRS to Congress occur no later than 5 pm on May 18, 2023, and warned that failure to do so would make the Committee take additional action.
Jason Smith is not the only Republican to take notice of this. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) took to social media to tweet, "The repeated weaponization of the federal government to attack one political party and protect the other is un-American." The House Speaker further promised that the "@WaysAndMeansGOP will expose any possible cover-up at the IRS, and Republicans will protect the whistleblowers who shine a light on government misconduct."
Chairman Smith similarly pledged that his committee "will follow where the facts lead and get to the bottom of these troubling allegations" on social media. The repeated weaponization of the federal government to attack one political party and protect the other is un-American.@WaysAndMeansGOP will expose any possible cover-up at the IRS, and Republicans will protect the whistleblowers who shine a light on government misconduct. https://t.co/n4JmLJmHAT
