The “Take Pride Act” was introduced into the Minnesota Legislature by transgender Democratic–Farmer–Labor Party Rep. Leigh Finke earlier this year, and while the author claims that nothing in the bill’s text would weaken pedophilia laws, the measure would strip language from the state Human Rights Act explicitly excluding pedophiles from being protected as a “sexual orientation.”
The revelation regarding the bill HF 1655 has left Republicans in Minnesota shocked and bewildered, according to Fox News. The outlet reported that the Minnesota Human Rights Act, described by the state as “one of the strongest civil rights laws in the country,” protects against discrimination based on sexual orientation.
The Act defines sexual orientation exhaustively as, “having or being perceived as having an emotional, physical, or sexual attachment to another person without regard to the sex of that person or having or being perceived as having an orientation for such attachment, or having or being perceived as having a self-image or identity not traditionally associated with one’s biological maleness or femaleness.”
However, the act contained a caveat, a single glaring exception, a safety mechanism to protect the defenseless:
“Sexual orientation’ does not include a physical or sexual attachment to children by an adult.”
It is that language that ,under the “Take Pride Act” authored by Rep. Finke, would be stripped away.

The organization Gays Against Groomers expressed alarm in a Wednesday tweet writing,
” A transgender representative in Minnesota has introduced a bill that will remove the exclusion of pedophiles from the protected class of “sexual orientation.” This means it will be illegal to discriminate against child rapists. This is what we have been sounding the alarm on. There is a concerted effort to normalize the sexualization of children and to legalize pedophilia. This is just one more step toward that end goal. We need everyone to join in this fight before it is too late.”

Finke was reached by Fox for comment and defended the bill claiming that the measure, “updates outdated language that incorrectly ties pedophilia to a person’s sexual orientation.”
Finke added, “Nothing in the bill changes or weakens any crimes against children, or the state’s ability to prosecute those who break the law. Of course, pedophilia is not a sexual orientation.”
“The language never should have been included in the statutory definition in the first place. Crimes against children are located in Minnesota’s criminal statutes, and again, they remain unchanged,” Finke concluded.
Republican House Minority Leader Lisa Demuth told Fox News in a statement, “Under the Human Rights Act, the definition of sexual orientation says that sexual orientation does not include physical or sexual attraction to children by an adult — or, more simply described, pedophilia. The Democrats’ decision to strike this language is disturbing and inexplicable.”
“House Republicans will be presenting an amendment today to clarify that pedophilia is absolutely not a protected class under the Human Rights Act. We sincerely hope Democrats will join us in ensuring our children are protected,” Demuth added.
