The hit film 'Sound of Freedom' surpassed all expectations in 2023 and became one of the biggest blockbusters of the year, surpassing Taylor Swift's 'The Eras Tour' and various other big franchises in 2023.
As previously reported by the DC Enquirer, the movie is about the real-life child sex trafficking ring that exists throughout Latin America and the United States. The movie itself is based on the true story of Tim Ballard, a former CIA agent, who becomes frustrated only capturing people who watched child pornography in the United States and not catching those responsible for making the evil product.
According to Box Office Mojo, the film has garnered $184,178,046 after opening on July 4th in 2,852 theaters, notably far fewer theaters than the normal Hollywood production. After its initial success, the film's showings were expanded to 3,411 theaters. The film has also been able to bring in $63,928,158 at the international box office after various releases throughout the globe. This led the total worldwide gross for the film to reach a staggering $248,106,204.
In comparison, Taylor Swift's film was narrowly defeated domestically by 'Sound of Freedom', with 'The Eras Tour' generating $179,650,565 domestically, as reported by Christian Headlines. The film did make up for the lower domestic box office numbers with a gross of $70,690,136 in the international market, leading to the worldwide gross for the film to slightly surpass "Sound of Freedom" with just over $250 million per Box Office Mojo.
Big-name Hollywood films released last year also didn't stack up to the success "Sound of Freedom," which starred Jim Caviezel as a federal agent who quits his job to rescue children in Latin America from child trafficking. The long-established franchise 'Transformers' has been beaten out as well, with the latest installment 'Transformers: Rise of the Beasts' only able to bring in $157,008,556 over its theatrical run after its release on June 9th. Other franchises also didn't keep up with the success of 'Sound of Freedom,' with 'Creed III' only bringing in $156,248,615. The film was released earlier this year on March 3rd.
The millions of Americans who went to see 'Sound of Freedom' culminated in the film made by the small Angel Studios to become the tenth highest-grossing film of the year domestically, beating out huge franchises like Indiana Jones and Mission Impossible. The film, produced by Eduardo Verastegui, came just behind the latest John Wick and Ant-Man movies.
"I put my life in this movie because this movie is bigger than ourselves," Verastegui said about the film's success, per The Daily Wire. "I was praying to God for an angel to come and rescue this film," he added. "And what are the odds that from all the studios, the one that picked this movie is called Angel Studios?"
