On Monday, the hit film 'Sound of Freedom' surpassed $164 million at the domestic box office as it continues to expose child sex trafficking for the heinous crime that it is. That box office haul, over 10 times its initial budget, is blasting past some of Hollywood's biggest blockbusters this summer.
As previously reported by the DC Enquirer, the movie is about the real-life child sex trafficking ring that exists throughout Latin America and the United States. The movie itself is based on the true story of Tim Ballard, a former CIA agent, who becomes frustrated only capturing people who watched child pornography in the United States and not catching those responsible for making the evil product.
According to Box Office Mojo, the film has garnered $164,011,020 after opening on July 4th in 2,852 theaters, notably far fewer theaters than the normal Hollywood production. After its initial success, the film's showings were expanded to 3,411 theaters.
Meanwhile, the new film 'Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning' starring Tom Cruise only has a domestic box office haul of $151,163,282, per Box Office Mojo. That's despite the fact that the film was released in 4,327 theaters right on its opening day of July 12, only a few days after 'Sound of Freedom.'
Other big-name Hollywood films released earlier this year aren't stacking up well against the Jim Caviezel film either.
The long-established franchise 'Transformers' has been beaten out as well with the latest installment 'Transformers: Rise of the Beasts' only able to bring in $157,008,556 over its theatrical run after releasing on June 9th.
Other franchises also didn't keep up with the success of 'Sound of Freedom' with 'Creed III' only bringing in $156,248,615. The film was released earlier this year on March 3rd.
'Sound of Freedom' is even catching up to the company that passed on its initial release as revealed by Producer Eduardo Verástegui. 'Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny' starring Harrison Ford has only been able to bring in $170,712,517 so far domestically. That's despite the fact that the film was released six days before 'Sound of Freedom' on June 28th and had a budget of nearly $300 million. That's nearly 20 times the budget of the Angel Studios production.
The success of 'Sound of Freedom' is unparalleled and goes to show just how far a story with a powerful and important story can go thanks to the millions of Americans who went to the theater to support the film.
