'There Is No Place For It In Texas': AG Ken Paxton Takes Action After Austin Hospital Exposed For Giving Transgender Treatments To Minors

A Texas hospital is in the midst of being investigated by Attorney General Ken Paxton (R) due to them having “potentially illegal activity” taking place but did not elaborate any further.

Paxton announced in a statement “It is now alarmingly common for fringe activists to use their positions in medicine and health care to force experimental, life-altering procedures onto children.” Paxton went in harder on the topic, saying that “there is no place for it in Texas.”

As of now, Texas does not have a law officially banning the treatment of transgender care for minors, but Paxton has pushed for the state to designate it as child abuse. The hospital investigation is believed to be an attempt to further this idea, as well as go through potential other avenues to outlaw the treatment, per AP News

Republican lawmakers in Texas are working on passing legislation banning the treatment of transgender minors, however, the vote, which was intended to be on Friday, has been delayed for at least a whole day.  Paxton and Governor Greg Abbott (R-TX) have both made efforts to restrict the life-altering treatment. In 2022, Paxton released a non-binding legal opinion that represented certain gender-affirming treatments as child abuse. Abbott followed suit, ordering Texas’ child welfare agency to begin investigating families that had children receiving the care, per NBC. However, a judge in Texas blocked those probes last year.

Paxton is looking into information on Dell Children’s Hospital about its policies on puberty blockers as well as different documents that identify patients that were referred for treatment and/or counseling.

Dell Children’s Hospital operates under the non-profit Catholic health system Ascension, which has an affiliation with the University of Texas in Austin. The group has stated that it prohibits any surgeries or hormone therapy prescriptions for children suffering from gender dysphoria. The hospital has said that it plans to take any “appropriate action” were it to be any different. However, the hospital's spokeswoman Ann Howser refused to elaborate.

Paxton says that the purpose of the investigation is “to uncover the truth.” There undoubtedly seems to be conflicting accounts, with the hospital claiming no wrongdoing, while outside sources are informing the Texas government otherwise.

This announcement rides the wave of many other states banning transgender treatment for children, as well as reports like North Carolina university hospitals giving children as young as two-years-old gender care treatment, per the DC Enquirer

Given time in the investigation, the results will show whether or not the hospital is consistent with its words. Until then, we can only wait and see.
