With President Joe Biden's struggle in swing state polls, the Trump campaign is seizing an opportunity to strategically expand the electoral map. The plan is to establish multiple field offices in Minnesota and Virginia, traditionally Democrat strongholds, thereby forcing the Democrats to defend their territory and providing Trump with additional paths to victory in November.
The memo obtained by CBS News reveals that the campaign will be opening eight "Trump Force 47" field offices in Minnesota and 11 offices in Virginia. Team Trump has also staffed up in both states as they partner with the Republican National Committee's (RNC) volunteer canvassing program. The move is an attempt to open up the electoral map and create "at least 12 additional pathways to 270." The Trump campaign's expansion will also ensure that the Democratic National Committee (DNC) will have to spend campaign cash on traditionally blue states instead of the critical swing states of Michigan, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania.
The Trump campaign's field office expansion isn't based off fantasy either. Recent polling from Emerson College, as previously reported by the DC Enquirer, has Trump and Biden tied in The Land of 10,000 Lakes and recent polls out of Virginia show the two tied or Biden up by one or two points. If Trump is able to flip either of the states in November, it would be a political earthquake similar to his upset victory in 2016.
Both states have been firmly in the Democrat column for decades but signs of weakenss have begun to show. Despite a Republican candidate having not won Minessota since 1972 and Virginia since 2004, both states have leaned Republican in recent years. The 45th president narrowly lost Minnesota in 2016 against Hillary Clinton by just two percent. Virginia has also been trending Republican after Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R_VA) won a surprise victory in 2021.
Trump seems to be sticking to his promise of making a "heavy play" for Minnesota and Virginia, telling Breitbart earlier this year, "One of the other things I'm going to do — and I may be foolish in doing it — is I'm going to make a heavy play for New York, heavy play for New Jersey, heavy play for Virginia, heavy play for New Mexico, and a heavy play for a state that hasn't been won in years, Minnesota. I'm going to do rallies, I'm going to do speeches, I'm going to work them. That doesn't mean I'm going to work them as hard as I work Pennsylvania, where I'm doing very well."
