Trump Continues To Dwarf DeSantis In The Polls As The 'Announcement Bump' Fails To Materialize

Leading 2024 presidential candidate and 45th President Donald Trump continues to utterly dominate the polls for the GOP nomination by beating second-place Ron DeSantis (R-FL) by 34 points. The Florida governor has only gained two percent after launching his presidential bid last week.

In a new poll by Morning Consult that was updated on Wednesday, Trump continues to reign supreme over the other potential Republican nominees with a convincing 56 percent support. DeSantis is able to trail at 22 percent, two percent more than when he had yet to announce his bid for the nomination.

Others that hold less support trail after the Florida governor such as former Vice President Mike Pence (R-IN) who sits at five percent, and former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley (R-SC) and businessman Vivek Ramaswamy (R-NY), who each sit at four percent support. Other names then follow like Senator Tim Scott (R-SC) at three percent and former Representative Liz Cheney (R-WY) at two percent before going to candidates with one percent support or less.

The polling seems to spell bad news for DeSantis as he was only able to gain two percent following his launch which is a far cry from what he once polled, at one point being able to garner 34 percent. While the Florida governor's support seems to show a negative trend, Trump has continued to rise, peaking at 61 percent just two weeks ago.

DeSantis manages to take 47 percent when it comes to being the second choice behind Trump as voters in the Republican primaries are asked for both their first and second choice. But in the same style, Trump snags 51 percent support as a second choice if voters choose DeSantis, still putting the 44-year-old politician behind.

Things can’t seem to go right for the Sunshine State governor, as he also loses to incumbent President Joe Biden in potential election match-ups, with 43 percent declaring they’d vote for Biden while only 40 percent would give their vote to DeSantis. In the same election matchup style, Trump was capable of tying with Biden, each garnering 43 percent of the vote.

It seems the only poll DeSantis was able to beat Trump in was people who had seen, read, or heard something positive about the candidates. From those polled, 51 percent say they’ve gotten positive news on the Florida governor with only 17 percent getting negative results. Donald Trump has a lower 42 percent of people who have gotten positive news but also has a much higher 32 percent who have received negative news on the former president.

Overall, polling doesn’t show many positives for the up-and-coming Florida governor, but campaign season is still young and there’s plenty of time for candidates to rise and fall throughout the 2024 election.
