Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) Secretary Denis McDonough stated on Friday that they will provide abortion services in cases of rape, incest, and instances where the mother’s life is threatened. The VA will conduct these operations “regardless of state restrictions” meaning that the various pro-life laws that ban abortion in all instances across the country will be ignored by the federal agency.

“Last night, the Department of Veterans Affairs submitted to the Federal Register an interim final rule that will allow VA to provide access to abortion counseling and — in certain cases — abortions to pregnant Veterans and VA beneficiaries,” the department announced in a statement. “Specifically, VA will provide access to abortions when the life or health of the pregnant Veteran would be endangered if the pregnancy were carried to term, or when the pregnancy is the result of rape or incest.”

The secretary then argued that abortions were necessary for veterans, however, there was no acknowledgment within the statement that the procedure leads to the ending of another life: “Access to medically necessary abortions is essential for preserving the life and health of Veterans and VA beneficiaries. Restricting access to abortion care has well-documented adverse health consequences, including increased risk of loss of future fertility, significant morbidity, or death. Veterans are also at greater risk of experiencing pregnancy-related complications due to increased rates of chronic health conditions. Therefore, to protect the life and health of pregnant Veterans and eligible beneficiaries, VA determined that it was necessary to provide access to abortion counseling and — in some cases — abortions.”

The decision to expand abortion services via federal facilities comes as Roe v. Wade was overturned in June leading to a plethora of states enacting abortion restrictions with some just recently coming into effect and the most consequential, Texas, taking effect last week.

“Pregnant Veterans and VA beneficiaries deserve to have access to world-class reproductive care when they need it most,” the VA secretary said in response to recent restrictions. “That’s what our nation owes them, and that’s what we at VA will deliver.”

“VA is taking this action because it has determined that providing access to abortion-related medical services is needed to protect the lives and health of veterans,” the VA explained, adding that employees will provide care irrespective of state laws forbidding such practices, according to The Wall Street Journal.

“VA serves roughly 300k women of childbearing age, and women Veterans are VA’s fastest growing cohort,” VA spokesman Terrence Hayes explained in an email to the Washington Post. Additionally, the department plans to roll out abortion services as quickly as possible to the 171 medical centers in the United States and the territories.

In a tweet announcing the policy, the secretary justified the move by arguing that it was for “patient safety.”

“This is a patient safety decision. Pregnant Veterans and VA beneficiaries deserve to have access to world-class reproductive care when they need it most,” he emphasized, adding, “That’s what our nation owes them, and that’s what we at VA will deliver.”

“We came to this decision after listening to VA health care providers and Veterans across the country,” he continued. “who made clear that abortion restrictions are creating a medical emergency for the Vets we serve.”

Veteran Affairs providing abortions means that American taxpayer dollars will be used for the procedure as the Biden Administration attempts to usurp state law for the sake of ending the lives of unborn children. While abortions are being restricted to instances of rape, incest, and endangerment of a mother’s life, it is possible that the procedure could be broadened in the future.

One thing is for certain, however, the Biden Administration has no respect for Americans who want to protect life, and his speech on Thursday proved that he wants to demonize millions of Americans rather than unite the country. This new policy by the VA is yet another instance of President Biden enforcing his will on pro-life Americans.
