'He Views Us As Political Pawns': Veteran Republican Congressman Writes Scathing Op-Ed On Biden's Treatment of Veterans

Representative Brian Mast (R-FL), an Afghanistan war veteran, wrote an op-ed on Fox News denouncing President Biden's treatment of fellow veterans and accusing him of using veterans as political pawns.

In his op-ed, Mr. Mast wrote that he experienced hatred toward him back in 2014 during an anti-Israel protest and how this experience "is the closest I’ve ever gotten to understanding how" American veterans felt when they were spat on by "cowards" during the Vietnam War. Mast pivots from this experience and mourns how "[i]t’s just as broken when the commander in chief doesn’t have your back" and how President Joe Biden fits that description but is worse since "he views us as political pawns."

Mast wrote that the latest iteration of Biden using veterans is when President Biden cried crocodile tears about veteran benefits in the event of the passage of the Republican-endorsed Limit, Save and Grow Act of 2023 through the Senate over the debt ceiling crisis.

The bill itself is designed with the purpose of easing the massive debt burden that the United States has been accumulating and putting the country on the path toward sustainable growth and more responsible spending. The bill describes itself as a measure to increase the federal debt limit while decreasing spending through, in part, the repealment of several energy tax credits, modification of the permitting process and other requirements for energy projects, expansion of the work requirements for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and other programs, and nullification of regulations for the cancellation of federal student loan debt.

Representative Mast accused Biden of "lying about" the bill's "impact on veterans’ benefits" and noted that "[a]s a veteran, and as a member of Congress who has read and voted on the bill, hear me when I say this: there are zero cuts to the Department of Veterans’ Affairs (VA) or to veterans’ benefits."

The Florida congressman went on to explain that "What the bill does is cap discretionary spending at the same level the federal government was operating under in December 2022, a level that Biden then praised for providing 'world-class healthcare' for veterans."

Mast accused Biden of having faux respect for those in uniform and pointed out his terrible political record when it comes to helping veterans.

He emphasized that when Biden was vice president he "was responsible for the complete failure and subsequent coverup at the VA in 2014 that left roughly 120,000 veterans on a waitlist and resulted in the deaths of at least 40 who were still waiting for care." Mast also explored Biden's time in Senate when it came to veterans and saw Biden as lacking here as well. He wrote that Biden "voted against legislation to increase funding for veterans’ benefits on at least three different occasions." Mast also explored Biden's presidential term and wrote that Biden was very disrespectful when he checked "his watch as 13 flag-draped coffins were unloaded at Dover Air Force Base following his botched withdrawal from Afghanistan."

The Florida Republican summarized the content of his article on Twitter when he wrote that "As a veteran & as someone who voted on the bill, hear me when I say this: there are ZERO cuts to the VA or to veterans’ benefits in the Limit, Save, Grow Act. But that doesn’t fit Biden’s narrative, so he’s using veterans as political pawns yet again."
