WATCH: Former Capitol Police Chief Reveals Pelosi, McConnell Played Major Role In January 6's Lack Of Security

In an interview with Tucker Carlson, former Capitol Police Chief Steven Sund revealed that then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (R-CA) and then-Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) effectively rejected his request for the assistance of the National Guard on January 6th, 2021.

"Congress passed a law, 2 U.S. Code 1970, look it up, just make sure you look it up before December '22, when they changed it... that requires me to go and bring in National Guard or federal assistance, in advance, I have to go to the Capitol Police board and get approval from congressional leadership in advance like I did on January 3rd. I am denied twice, because of optics and because the intelligence did not support it," Sund told Tucker.

The old formulation of U.S. Code 1970 reads as follows, "Executive departments and Executive agencies may assist the United States Capitol Police in the performance of its duties by providing services (including personnel), equipment, and facilities on a temporary and reimbursable basis when requested by the Capitol Police Board or in accordance with paragraph... Before making a request under this paragraph, the Capitol Police Board shall consult with appropriate Members of the Senate and House of Representatives in leadership positions, except in an emergency."

Sund was then pressed by Tucker Carlson on who was in charge of rejecting or denying his requests. He said he was denied by both the House Sergeant at Arms and the Senate Sergeant at Arms. But he admitted to Tucker, that he was effectively denied by Mitch McConnell and Nancy Pelosi themselves.

"Pelosi was the number one boss [of the House], and McConnell on the Senate side... my request was shut down, one because of optics, which is interesting," Sund told Tucker.

As the Daily Caller previously reported, in the same interview, he blamed the incident, at least partially, on a failure of intelligence.

"Think about it. I am the chief of police at the United States Capitol, probably one of the most prominent and should be the most secure building in the United States and the world. You know, you’d like to think of that,” Sund said “But when you look at it, and don’t take my word for it, look at, there’s now at least four congressional reports talking about the intelligence failure, IG reports, GAO reports talking about various intelligence failures."

"But coming into it, you know, think about it. FBI, the Washington Field Office didn’t put out a single document, a single official document specific to January 6," Sund concluded.
