During a rally in Atlanta, Georgia, over the weekend, Republican nominee Donald Trump explained that the July 13 assassination attempt against him by a lone gunman in Butler, Pennsylvania, could have resulted in tragedy if it wasn't for God's intervention.
The gunman, 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, was able to fire off eight shots, resulting in the death of Corey Comperatore and the serious injury of two others before Crooks was neutralized by a Secret Service counter-sniper team. Trump, who was grazed by a bullet that hit his right ear just seconds after he turned his head to look at a screen behind him, explained that the Secret Service agents sprung into action to shield him from the gunfire.
"Say what you want; those people were brave. They were running to me," Trump explained about the agents assigned to his detail. "And, the bullets were flying. The Secret Service, they were very brave, they were very brave I can say. They were very brave. They were running at me, and they knew the bullets were going right over my head at that point."
"The first one was not a good situation, not a good situation. That was really something incredible. That was from God. That was from God. Because the chances….that was from God," he explained about the slight chance that he turned his head at the last moment to prevent a bullet from killing him. "For all of you non-believers, that one was from God, right?"
While Trump narrowly survived the attempt on his life thanks to the agents' quick reaction, the Secret Service has been engulfed in controversy after the various security failures that took place at the rally were exposed. The Secret Service repeatedly failed to stop the gunman before the shooting took place despite multiple sitings of the suspicious individual by local law enforcement up to 90 minutes before the shooting.
As previously reported by the DC Enquirer, newly-released footage, taken at 6:08 PM just three minutes before Crooks opened fire at 6:11 PM, shows the gunman in two instances moving around on the roof of the AGR building, peeking his head over the roof to see his target. The footage directly contradicts Secret Service Director Rowe's testimony to Congress last week. The acting head of the Secret Service explained that Crooks was lying prone on the roof before opening fire and that Secret Service counter snipers were unable to see him before he opened fire on Trump and the rally-goers.
"I went to the roof of the AGR building where the assailant fired shots, and I laid in a prone position to evaluate his line of sight. What I saw made me ashamed," Rowe told the senators. The acting Secret Service director also displayed images for the senators that showed just how close the shooter was to the local law enforcement allegedly stationed in the building parallel to the roof. "Looking left, why was the assailant not seen?" Rowe asked. "I cannot understand why there was not better coverage or at least somebody looking at that roofline when that's where they were posted."
While Rowe placed some blame on local law enforcement, he ultimately blamed his agency for the failure. "This is a failure of the Secret Service," he said.
While Trump was right to credit God for his protection, the shooting would have never taken place had the Secret Service not had the plethora of security failures that allowed an untrained 20-year-old to get a clear shot at a former president. The Secret Service must be reformed, and those responsible are held accountable for their failure.
