Presumptive GOP nominee and 45th President Donald Trump has a tough decision to make ahead of the upcoming general election. Who will he choose as his running mate? On Tuesday, the vice presidential shortlist, which has been highly speculated about in recent months following Trump's solidified lead in the Republican primary, just got bigger with Gov. Greg Abbott (R-TX) currently being considered.
During a joint interview with Fox News host Sean Hannity during Trump's visit to Eagle Pass, Texas, the 45th president was asked whether Abbott would be someone he would consider for a running mate. "I've been hearing that more and more from friends of mine - after this show, I think I'm going to hear it a lot more, too," Trump said.
"He's a spectacular man. I was honored when I got his endorsement seven months ago, and I likewise endorsed him. We didn't have a deal," Trump explained. "I just felt good about it, and he came out and he said, 'I'd like to endorse you. You did a good job.' I felt the same way about him. He's done a great job [and] yes, certainly, he would be somebody that I would very much consider."
Gov. Abbott endorsed Trump in the Republican primary in November prior to any primary contests, and he was still facing a primary challenge from several candidates, including Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL).
While the Texas governor praised Trump for considering him for one of the most prestigious posts in the country, Abbott explained during a press conference in Austin that he wants to stay in the Lone Star State. "Obviously, it's very nice of him to say, but I think you all know that my focus is entirely on the State of Texas," he told reporters. "As you know, I'm working right now on the midterm election process. I've already talked about that. I've announced that I'm running for reelection two years from now, and so my commitment is to Texas, and I'm staying in Texas."
While Abbott will likely turn down a vice presidential offer, Trump revealed the other candidates he is currently considering late last month. As previously reported by the DC Enquirer, Trump was asked by Fox News host Laura Ingraham if businessman Vivek Ramaswamy (R-OH), Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL), Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC), Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL), former Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (I-HI), and Gov. Kristi Noem (R-SD) were on his vice presidential shortlist. "They are," Trump responded. "So I think it is very important. But first is that, as we said, it has to do with whoever - it's a very important position for that reason. You'd like to get someone who could help you from a voter standpoint. And honestly, all of those people are good. They're all good. They're all solid."
