Biden Administration Will Use Pentagon Classified Papers ‘Leak To Start Spying On You’ Says Donald Trump Jr

The leaking of classified Pentagon papers that primarily had to do with the Russo-Ukraine war through a Discord server has mobilized forces advocating stronger governmental powers on social media. NBC News tweeted that they had an exclusive story that “The Biden administration is looking at expanding how it monitors social media sites and chatrooms after U.S. intelligence failed to realize classified Pentagon documents circulated online for weeks, officials briefed on the matter say.”

This tweet was replied to by Donald Trump Junior, the son of the former president, who wrote that “Biden is going to use this leak to start spying on you. This is your DM’s, next will be your text messages, pretty soon there will be no end to what they’ll be looking at. Candidly, they’re probably already doing it… but they’ll try to make it actually legal.”

Senator J.D. Vance (R-OH) had a similar reaction to this news item when he tweeted that “The Biden administration is incompetent and so now they want to spy on us.”

Such expanded powers would no doubt further the pre-existing state censorship-technological nexus that the Twitter Files exposed. This nexus has been used to censor the voices of dissents on both the right and the left even when there was nothing factually incorrect about the analysis by these dissents. Will Americans really trust the government to wield greater powers responsibly when it has abused its current powers?

A class of individuals evidentially do. Glenn Greenwald, a veteran journalist, decried that many in his profession seemed to be cheerleading such an initiative. Mr. Greenwald wrote that “Corporate journalists went to the Pentagon today to angrily demand they find ways to clamp down on secrets and ensure that no more leaks can happen. One specifically demanded they monitor Discord. Congrats to the “journalists” for getting less transparency and more monitoring.”

He further wrote in a related tweet that “It is indescribably shocking and sickening that the nation’s two largest media outlets were the ones who did the FBI’s work and hunted for the leaker and outed him. But what they did at the Pentagon was only slightly less gross.”

Mr. Greenwald made the point earlier that “If Daniel Ellsberg leaked the Pentagon Papers today, the only outlets that covered its substance would be Fox and independent media; liberal journalists would call it a ‘nothing burger’ and seek to discredit the journalists; and liberals would demand he be hanged as a traitor.”

In the 1971 publication of the Pentagon Papers, which was a study commissioned by Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara that detailed American involvement in Vietnam from 1945 to 1967, in the New York Times was a similar incident of someone leaking the sensitive report that showed that administrations from Truman to Johnson had misled the nation about the extent of American involvement.

The arrest and charging of an American citizen and member of the Air National Guard, Jack D. Teixeira, with being the leaker of the Russo-Ukraine War-related documents, show the Biden administration misleading the public yet again on the state of the war and about American presence on the ground in Ukraine, seems to put to bed the narrative that Russia was behind the leaks. Indeed, many in the corporate press last week were pontificating about this possibility. Aaron Maté, a journalist, sarcastically tweeted simply “Any update on this?” to a host of such proclamations on the press after the news of the arrest of the suspected leaker occurred.

To be sure, whistleblowing is a controversial matter and people have different ideas about the right process to go about doing it. However, further legalizing and expanding the surveillance state ought to be treated skeptically.
