On Thursday, Department of Justice Special Counsel Jack Smith announced three additional counts against 45th President Donald Trump in the classified documents case after an indictment was brought against the Republican frontrunner last month.
According to the indictment, Trump has been charged with "willful retention of national defense information" and "corruptly destroying or concealing records." Jack Smith is also alleging that President Trump demanded that a staffer delete camera footage to "obstruct the probe."
In addition to these extra counts being brought against Trump, a third defendant, Carlos De Oliveira, was also named by Special Counsel Jack Smith. The indictment now includes three individuals with those being Oliveira, Donald Trump, and Trump aide Walt Nauta.
Nauta and Oliveira both assisted in the moving of documents within Mar-a-Lago after the Department of Justice issued a subpoena for the documents to be returned to the National Archives in May. The 60-page indictment also alleges that Oliveira was the individual who was ordered by Trump to delete the footage.
“De Oliveira told Trump Employee 4 that ‘the boss’ wanted the server deleted," the indictment explains.
As previously reported by the DC Enquirer, Florida U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon set the date for the trial for May 20th, 2024 as a compromise between the Biden Department of Justice which pushed for December 11th, right in the middle of the election season, and Trump's legal team's request for a date after the conclusion of the 2024 election.
The full indictment can be read here.
The news of additional charges comes after Trump's legal team met with the Department of Justice on Thursday morning to discuss the upcoming indictment in the January 6th case.
According to The New York Times, citing three people "familiar with the matter," the federal prosecutors under Smith are moving closer toward indicting Trump for his actions leading up to and on January 6th and subsequent statements regarding the election, as previously reported by the DC Enquirer.
This is a developing story and will be updated accordingly.
