Donald Trump continues to rise in polling, with a new poll Tuesday showing him at 60 percent support in the Republican primary.
The poll, per Morning Consult, has him leading the second-place choice, Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) by 41 percent. The poll establishes Trump as the clear front-runner for the GOP nomination.
It is worth noting that DeSantis has yet to announce his bid for the Republican primary, but he is nonetheless still seen as the most serious challenger to Trump for the position. The poll released on Tuesday has him scoring at the lowest level yet since the polling of the primary first began.
DeSantis does still have the highest favorability rating from potential voters, with 44 percent viewing him positively compared to Donald Trump's 42 percent. Far fewer people also view him unfavorably in comparison to the former president, with only 18 percent having a negative view of him compared to Trump's 33 percent.
DeSantis supporters are also far more certain of their support of him than Trump supporters, with 16 percent of Trump supporters being uncertain where their loyalty lies while only five percent of DeSantis supporters are uncertain.
Former Vice President Mike Pence and businessman Vivek Ramaswamy both are tied for third place in the polling, each sporting five percent support for the primary nomination. The poll also notes that Ramaswamy has been rising in the polls, with 39 percent of voters viewing the primary candidate favorably.
The poll was conducted between May 5th-7th with a total of 3,574 potential Republican primary voters and is stated to have a margin of error of two percent.
Since the time of the polling, Trump has been found liable for battery and defamation against E. Jean Carroll, as reported by the DC Enquirer. It’s unclear, however, whether this decision would harm or aid the GOP primary as he vehemently denies any involvement with her, claiming on his Truth Social account “I HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA WHO THIS WOMAN IS.”
This poll comes after an earlier survey showed that both Trump and DeSantis are beating Biden out in the overall election polls, likely due to Biden’s deteriorating mental acuity, as well as his recent blunders with both the debt ceiling and Title 42's expiration, as previously reported by the DC Enquirer.
The Morning Consult poll had its own election matchup as well, which showed Joe Biden beating both Trump and DeSantis in potential elections, but each with a slim margin. Biden beat DeSantis by four percent and beat Trump by two percent.
Overall, this most recent poll shows 45th President Trump in a strong position to win the Republican primary and take on Biden for the White House in 2024.
