High School Drag Event In Florida Gets CANCELED After Call From DeSantis’ Department Of Education

This Wednesday, the drag event “Donuts and Drag,” which was scheduled to take place at Boone High School in Orlando, Florida, was canceled after the high school received a call from Florida’s Department of Education.

While Boone High School Principal Hector Maestra maintains the event was not a drag show, that didn’t stop the event from being canceled.

“The event Donuts & Drag was not a drag show, but an opportunity for the students to hear a positive message of acceptance and love,” Principal Hector Maestre told The Floridian. “This was to be the third year the speaker has addressed this club. As a result of a call from the Florida Department of Education today, the event has been canceled. The Department questioned whether the event was age and developmentally appropriate and indicated any administrator, teacher, or staff member in attendance may be investigated and jeopardize their professional license.”

The Floridian adds that the drag performer who would headline the event — Jason DeShazo, going by “Mama Ashley Rose” — dedicated the event to providing “a safe and family-friendly atmosphere for all people no matter their genderracesexual orientation, and/or religion, through mentoring, fundraising, fostering community, and promoting awareness of resources. Rose Dynasty embodies the message that you are ‘Loved, Accepted, and Wanted.'”

According to Flordia’s Voice News, several parents and grandparents voiced their concerns about the event. School Board Member Allicia Farrant said the following about the event:

“I have been made aware of a drag queen event that will be happening at one of our High Schools. I am looking into this to get further details but would like parents to know that I do NOT condone this type of event. We need to be RAISING the standard of excellence in our schools and helping students excel academically, not inviting drag queens in to eat donuts with our children,” Farrant said.

This is a major move that is sure to have wide-reaching implications all across the state of Florida and beyond.
