A recent survey published by the Sunshine Battleground Poll shows leading Republican presidential contender and 45th President Donald Trump dominating his Republican primary competition in the critical state of Florida. As a result, Trump holds a sizable lead on popular Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R-FL) and an even more impressive lead over the rest of the Republican field.
The survey covers the period of May 31st through June 2nd. The poll shows President Trump grabbing 53 percent of voter support in a hypothetical Republican primary competition. Governor DeSantis follows well behind, capturing 33 percent of support in his home state. All other competitors fail to hold a sizable following. Nikki Haley, Tim Scott, Mike Pence, and Vivek Ramaswamy all capture less than three percent of support each.
As a result, Trump dominates DeSantis in every age bracket. That includes the 18-29 age bracket, in which Trump grabs 61 percent of voter support compared to Ron DeSantis's 23 percent support. Trump and DeSantis are most competitive when it comes to people over the age of 65, and Trump still holds a 45-36 percent lead over DeSantis.
The poll finds Trump capturing 58 percent of the male vote, compared to DeSantis's 24 percent support. Nonetheless, the matchup is much more competitive among women, with the 45th president capturing 46 percent of the vote, in comparison to DeSantis's 43 percent.
As Florida Politics previously reported, the results are far more promising for the Florida governor when it comes to a region-by-region analysis.
"DeSantis is also more competitive in some regions than others, including a statistical tie in the Orlando area, with Trump and the Governor each drawing 43% support. Trump only leads by 10 points (48% to 38%) in North Florida and the Panhandle," Florida Politics reports. "DeSantis also leads among one educational cohort. While he’s behind with high school graduates, those with some college, and those with advanced degrees, he leads 45% to 42% with those who have Bachelor’s Degrees."
All in all, this survey shows that Trump still has a commanding lead over the 2024 field. While one might have expected DeSantis to have stolen momentum, it looks as though the Trump train is not stalling. After all, both DeSantis and Trump are Florida residents, so it is not surprising that Trump is competitive in the state DeSantis won by nearly 20 percentage points in 2022;
