BREAKING: In The Dead Of Night, DeSantis Signs Abortion Restriction Bill In Pro-Life Victory

In the dead of night on Thursday, Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) signed the Heartbeat Protection Act into law which limits abortion in the state to six weeks.

“Signed the Heartbeat Protection Act, which expands pro-life protections and devotes resources to help young mothers and families,” the governor wrote on Twitter.

The signing of the bill will restrict abortion in Florida, which has been an abortion destination for many in the South thanks to the state only having a 15-week abortion ban.

Following the Supreme Court’s decision in Obergefell v. Hodges, Florida saw an increase in the number of abortions performed in the state month over month, according to The New York Times.

That, however, is coming to an end after the bill passed 70 to 40 in the Florida legislature.

“For the past 50 years, we’ve had a culture grow in this nation — a culture of abortion for any reason at any time,” State Representative Jenna Persons-Mulicka (R-Fort Meyers) said. “Today we lead. Today we stand for life. We stand with mothers, and we stand with Florida families. And by your vote today, we change the culture of abortion to a culture of life.”

DeSantis’ decision to sign the bill at 11 at night, however, is getting attention from both sides of the aisle.

“In the dead of the night DeSantis strips women of their fundamental freedoms,” wrote Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA).

“Why is DeSantis trying to hide the fact that he just signed a 6-week abortion ban? Florida has been an abortion destination state under his leadership! He does press conferences for everything,” wrote XStrategies CEO Alex Brueswitz. “But not this? Why is he signing this bill in the dead of night? So strange!!”

“I’m pro life. Just confused why he signed the bill at midnight when most are asleep? Why didn’t he do a big signing and press conference in the am?” he added.

While the optics around the signing of the legislation may be an attempt to limit the publicity of the six-week ban, this is a pro-life victory for the state of Florida and thousands will be saved thanks to it.
