Democrats Turn on Biden, Join Republicans to Tackle the ‘National Crisis’ Of Fentanyl

A group of congressional lawmakers from across the political spectrum have formed the Bipartisan Fentanyl Prevention Caucus to deal with the “national crisis” the opiate poses to the United States, according to Just The News. The scale of the crisis over illicit fentanyl is startling in the United States.

As previously covered by the DC Enquirer over 300 Americans are poisoned daily by the drug and fentanyl is primarily responsible for the over 70,000 overdose deaths by synthetic opioids in 2021. China and Mexico are the two major foreign sources trafficking in the substance.

The caucus promised to “coordinate with members from both sides of the aisle to combat the nationwide spike in fentanyl-related overdoses and drug poisonings” and work with federal as well as state law enforcement “to educate the public and the Congress, in cooperation with prevention and awareness groups to better understand the ongoing threat of fentanyl in communities across America.”

Rep. Ken Calvert (R-CA), one of the Republican co-founders of the caucus, remarked that “Fentanyl is devastating the lives of Americans in every corner of our country.”

He added that “[w]ith fentanyl-related deaths climbing every year, we need new solutions to stop this alarming trend. This is not a partisan issue – it’s a national crisis.” Darrell Issa (R-CA), another Republican co-founder of the group, reiterated many of his fellow Californian Republican colleague’s statements. “Fentanyl is not a new danger. But the deadly threat it poses has now reached every corner of our country and no community is being spared” said Representative Issa.

He further added that “[t]he stakes could not be more clear: If we don’t win the fentanyl fight, we’re not going to just lose my community or my neighbor’s. Or any one of my colleagues. We’re going to lose this country. This caucus is needed now as we tell the truth, develop solutions, and save lives.”

The Democratic founders of this group, Joe Neguse (D-CO) and Madeleine Dean (D-PA) echoed similar sentiments. Mr. Neguse proclaimed that “Fentanyl is devastating communities throughout America—in every state, and in every region. Policymakers cannot ignore this deadly crisis and must work together to develop solutions. It is in the interest of every American to put an end to fentanyl poisonings. Through the Bipartisan Fentanyl Prevention Caucus, my colleagues and I are joining together to find and implement solutions, and ultimately save lives.”

Hopefully, this caucus will be a productive exercise in the best kind of bipartisan conduct in producing meaningful, life-saving, and constitutional legislation.
