Supreme Court Hands Crucial Win To Trump -Even Biden Can’t Object

On Monday, the Supreme Court of the United States ruled that the steel tariffs imposed under former President Donald Trump will remain in effect. The court declined to hear the appeal of USP Holdings, Inc., et al., Petitioners v. United States, et al. upholding the ruling of the lower courts which rejected claims that the government under Trump acted improperly by levying the tariffs.

According to The Western Journal, President Joe Biden left the tariffs more or less as imposed under Trump, making it an exception to the Democrat’s rule of typically sweeping away anything his predecessor did for good or ill.

The Epoch Times reported that the administration even urged the court to reject the challenge and uphold the tariffs that have been in place since March 2018. The rule imposed a 25 percent tariff on imported steel from a majority of other countries and a 10 percent tariff on imported aluminum.

At the time, then-President Trump tweeted about the tariffs, “When a country (USA) is losing many billions of dollars on trade with virtually every country it does business with, trade wars are good, and easy to win. Example, when we are down $100 billion with a certain country and they get cute, don’t trade anymore-we win big. It’s easy!”

Trump imposed the tariffs by citing Section 232 of the Trade Act of 1962 allows a president to impose restrictions on imports considered essential to national security, such as steel and aluminum. Notably, he told the American people the materials would be necessary to increase the production of aircraft, naval vessels, and other needed military equipment.

In support of this decision, Epoch Times noted that in 2017 Trump Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross investigated whether “steel was being imported under such circumstances as to threaten or impair national security,” as observed in the SCOTUS filing. Ross found conclusively that this was the case writing that, “excessive quantities of imports has the effect of weakening the internal economy of the United States, threatening to impair the national security.”
